Art and Design Technology

Subject Leader - Miss Wright

Intent

At St Joseph’s, we believe that Art and Design is a vital part of the children’s education. Through Art and Design, children have the opportunity to nurture their creativity and curiosity, to be inspired by a variety of different artists and art forms, and to engage in an exciting and hands-on way. Our Art and Design curriculum allows children to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas through designing and creating a range of artwork throughout their time with us. It also allows them to know and understand how art and design both reflects and shapes out history, as well as contributing to the culture and creativity of our nation.

Implementation

The Art and Design Curriculum at St Joseph’s is linked to the National Curriculum to ensure a well-structured comprehensive approach to this subject. Each class has 3 Art and Design topics throughout the year, as well as extra Art sessions for extra-curricular days or events. To ensure a broad range of art materials are used and experienced, the following media will be used throughout the children’s time at school:

  • printing
  • painting
  • drawing
  • textiles
  • 3D
  • sculpting

The work of famous local, national and international artists are also explored to enhance the children’s learning and giving the opportunity to link Art and Design topics to other parts of the wider curriculum.

Impact

Our art and design and DT curriculum is planned in line with class topics to provide children with an in depth and relevant topic that links to their wider learning. The curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression and give children the opportunity to use a range of materials and resources. The impact of our curriculum is measured through marking of written work in books, summative assessment at the end of a topic and final pieces of work being displayed around school.
